The Hannya mask is a very popular subject in Japanese Tattoo culture, you'll find it on many sleeves and on many backpieces in the oriental style.
The Hannya mask represents a Japanese female demon (bear in mind, the Japanese beliefs differ from Christian beliefs, not all demons are considered evil), In Noh theatre, the Hannya mask portrays the sould of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy. The mask displays very complex human emotions, it appears dangerous and frightening but also sorrowful and tormented.
The Hannya mask is often mounted on walls to drive evil spirits away.
